Overview
John is a Certified Information Privacy Professional for U.S. law (CIPP/US). The CIPP designation is the leading certification for privacy professionals around the world, signifying knowledge of the issues surrounding data privacy, data breach prevention and response, and Information Governance. In addition, John is a Certified Information Privacy Manager (CIPM), a certification indicating knowledge of how to implement privacy programs within an organization to address both legal requirements and real-world business concerns related to privacy.
In addition to helping organizations with data privacy issues, John defends large and small businesses, including product manufacturers and service businesses, in personal injury, product liability, warranty and other litigation. This includes defending clients in high-stakes mass tort and multi-district litigation. For example, John’s experience includes:
- Defending businesses in suits alleging property damage caused by their products or services.
- Defending medical device manufacturer in multi-district federal court litigation (MDL) and concurrent state court lawsuits regarding inferior vena cava (IVC) filters.
- Defending product manufacturers, contractors, and premises owners in state and federal asbestos and talc litigation.
As part of defending his clients, John helps them manage the discovery process for electronically stored information (ESI) both domestically and internationally. This includes instituting legal holds, identifying, collecting and culling data (including from social media and mobile sources / smart phones), and managing ESI vendors. John’s experience includes managing electronic document reviews and then producing data and electronic records. That type of ESI work also includes ensuring compliance with U.S. data privacy laws such as HIPAA, state data privacy rules, as well as European data privacy regulations.
In addition, John defends product manufacturers and sellers in claims alleging breach of warranty for electronic products, including computers and televisions. This involves analysis of the warranty provisions, the law and the facts to counsel the client for their best defense and resolution of the claims.
John also has experience in a wide range of other types of litigation including claims related to silica, coal tar, mold, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), environmental contamination, motor vehicle collisions, motorcycle accidents, and slip and falls. John has substantial experience resolving claims through alternative dispute resolution, including mediation and arbitration.
Prior to law school, John gained regulatory compliance experience working for a company that provided hazardous waste treatment, storage and disposal services.
